Farid Ayaz Qawwal and Party; Grinnel, IA 2/25/06

Went to a Qawwali concert at Grinnell College last night. Saw Farid Ayaz Qawwal and party’s perform brilliantly. The concert started off with “Allah Hoo” (a slightly different version than the canonical NFAK tune) which was followed by a devotional Qawwali dedicated to the Prophet. Farid Ayaz’s raga improvisations (they did a piece in the South Indian classical vein and another that was Rajasthani) were accompanied by a powerful presentation of all-time Qawwali hits such as Amir Khusro’s Mo Say Naina Milaike, the indispensible Mera Piya Ghar Aaya and Lal Meri Pat, riveted the discerning and the casual listener alike for the duration of their performance. Farid Ayaz, looking regal in his impeccable gold sherwani, punctuated the sets with brief 101’s over the method and history of Qawwali and North Indian Classical; all the while a young protege sat sternly behind him, holding a dissected 2 l. bottle of 7up–an improvised spittoon for his master’s pan spit.
